Whistler La Nina - Snow Snow Snow!
Winter 2011.12 is forecast to be another massive snow season for Whistler, following the 2nd snowiest on record with more than 51 feet of accumulated powder. Meteorologists are predicting a La Nina weather pattern - which means cooler than normal temperatures and consistent heavy precipitation during winter months. The Farmers Almanac is also calling for above average precipitation which, in Whistler, translates into lots of snow. And the new snow will have something to build upon as some of last year's massive accumulation still remains in the alpine. Powder hounds are rejoicing at the forecast for Whistler's ski and snowboard season, officially opening November 24, 2011.

Banff Shuttle bus EXTRA STOPS! (added 21st Dec 2010)
Its just been annouced that the Banff Shuttle bus to Lake Louise will now pick up in several locations on Banff Avenue as per previous years. However the Shuttle bus to Banff Mt Norquay & Sunshine still will only pick up outside the Mount Royal Hotel & Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

Whistler Snow! (added 26th Oct 2010)
SNOW ALERT! A heavy Pacific storm has been hitting Whistler Blackcomb this weekend, dropping between 25-30cm of snow at higher elevations. The freezing level is expected to remain steady with more periods of snow forecast for this week. Meteorologists are calling for a La Nina weather cycle for the Pacific Northwest, meaning cooler temperatures and more snow than Whistler Blackcomb's annual average of 34 feet/10.25m.
Sun Peaks Snow - (added 18th Oct 2010)
The Sun Peaks Village was covered in white on th 15th Oct with the first snowfall of the season at the resort. Sun Peaks locals are buzzing with excitement after 12.23 centimetres of fresh snow fell at mid-mountain. With cooler temperatures in the forecast, mountain operations crews hope to begin making snow over the next couple of days in preparation for the arrival of the Austrian Women's Ski Team in mid-November. Opening day for the public at Sun Peaks Resort is scheduled for Saturday, November 20.

Huge Snowstorm Hits Banff Lake Louise (added 22nd Sep 2010)
Over 20cm of snow blanketed Banff-Lake Louise, with more forecasted. The snowstorm started yesterday and continued non-stop throughout the night. With just over a month until opening, it looks like it's going to be a fantastic season!
Early snowfall at Jasper (added 22nd Sep 2010)
September 20, 2010 - Canada's most elevated ski area, Jasper's Marmot Basin, received over 10 cm of snow today with considerably more accumulation at higher elevations. At 1,700 metres, Marmot boasts the highest base elevation of all Canadian ski resorts meaning it often gets large amounts of snow when it is raining lower down in the Athabasca Valley and the town of Jasper. That was exactly the case today when a mix of rain and snow fell on the valley floor while heaps of wet, white snow fell on the mountain slopes.

Last winter Marmot opened on November 11, its earliest opening date ever, with ideal snow conditions. So far this fall is shaping up to deliver a repeat performance of last year's early season snowfalls which helped contribute to Marmot's record setting year for attendance. "I think this snow is here to stay", predicted an optimistic Brian Rode, Marmot's VP of Marketing and Sales. "We may still get some warm weather, but given that it's nearing the end of September, I am quite sure this is the beginning of a very good base layer", added Rode.

Big White To Introduce Rotating Safe Zones On Their Slopes (added 17th Aug 2010)
Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia, Canada has announced plans to introduce rotating "Family/Seniors Skiing and Snowboarding Zones" next season. Three runs will be selected each day from the resort's long inventory of pistes and they will be only accessible, on that day, through a temporary gate. Clearly sign posted they'll also have extra slope watch and ski patrol to ensure that speed and safe skiing and riding are monitored. The theme of these selected runs, which will change each day, will be slow with extreme caution.

"This program will allow our more senior guests as well as families with small children to explore more than just the green runs on the mountain and be in a space that is slow and safe." said Jeremy Hopkinson Big White's Outdoor Operations manager. "We have a lot of runs at Big White and plenty of space for everyone. Safety is a prime concern and these dedicated runs will allow those wanting to take it slow and easy to do so with the confidence that others on the run are doing the same." he added. Big White's Senior V.P. Michael Ballingall noted "Big White Ski Resort has always been a leader in safety. We have built a reputation for delivering quality and safe family holidays."
Helmets on the increase (added 27th July 2010)
Helmet usage is definitely on the rise among skiers and snowboarders, according to a study done by National Ski Areas Association (NSAA). Preliminary findings of the 2009/10 NSAA National Demographic Study show that 57 percent of skiers and snowboarders wear helmets while enjoying the slopes at U.S. ski areas. Helmet usage among those interviewed nationwide increased 19 percent over the 2008/09 season, when 48 percent of those interviewed were wearing helmets. In comparison, only 25 percent of skiers and snowboarders wore helmets during the 2002/03 season.

Almost 150cm of snow has fallen in Whistler this week providing a snowbase of over 3m!! Great for skiing and the upcoming olympics!! There is still space for March and April in Whistler and with this snowbase the skiing should be good then - so BOOK NOW!!

Snow at Big White (added 5th Oct)
Kelowna, B.C. - In Canada the official start of winter sports took place last night with the first Hockey Night in Canada Broadcast winter. The weatherman responded with a forecast for snow that proceeded to dump at Big White Ski Resort over night. After flurries during the week, last night Big White was hit with the first real snow storm of the season. Between 5 and 10 cm of snow fell on the resort and more may be on the way. All indicators are that the upcoming winter season is going to be a great one for snow at Big White. The local residents know that, traditionally, after a long hot and dry summer and warm dry fall, which the Okanagan has just experienced, Big White follows up with a big winter for snow.

New lift in Jasper construction begins (added 5th June 2009)
It is a beautiful sunny day in Jasper and a perfect day for flying! The sound of the Bell 214 rotor blade is music to our ears as the lift towers for the Kiefer T-Bar and Tranquilzer Chair are being flown out today to make room for what will be the longest high-speed quad chair in the Alberta Canadian Rockies. Keep up to date on the construction of our new 2.3 km (1.5 mile) long quad chair, manufactured by Leitner Poma, by logging on to www.skimarmot.com where you will find a link at the top right of our home page. Here you will find background information, links to our webcams, a blog and video footage. We will be uploading new video later today of the chopper flying towers. These are very exciting times at Marmot Basin and we look forward to opening this new chair to skiers and snowboarders this November!
